Day Of Surgery

Arrival

You are asked to arrive at the hospital 1-1.5 hours before your scheduled surgery. After checking at Admitting, you will be brought back to pre-op area where you’ll get changed and meet with a nurse. They will start your IV, review your paperwork, and put leg wraps on you, which help prevent blood clots. You will meet your anesthesiologist, who is in charge of making you comfortable during your surgery. Dr. O’Sullivan will also stop by to say “Hello” and answer any last minute questions.

In the Operating Room

When you are brought back to the operating room, you will meet several people who will assist Dr. O’Sullivan and the anesthesiologist in your care.

Recovery Room

After your procedure is finished, you will be taken to the recovery room. Specialized nurses there will make you comfortable as you wake up. Once you are ready to go home or to your room, if you’re staying overnight, you will be able to see your loved ones. To protect the privacy of other patients, loved ones are not permitted back in the recovery room.

Going Home

You will be given prescriptions for pain medication that you will want to have filled on the way home. The remainder of the day, you should rest and relax. Your body has been through a major event and it needs time to recover. An adult should be with you for at least 24 hours after surgery to monitor your recovery and help you if needed.
